Afroflamenco’s Diva: Concha Buika

She had me from the moment she parted her lips to release that delicious first note.  Her voice is raspy, sensual and incredibly melodious.  She combines flamenco, jazz, ballads and funk effortlessly.  Her presence is full of energy, spontaneity and character.  This is Concha Buika, a sister of Afro-Spanish descent who has captured the world of Flamenco.

Maria Concepcion Balboa Buika (Concha) was born in Palma de Mallorca.  Mallorca is the largest of Spain’s Balearic islands located in the Mediterranean Sea.  She grew up among gypsies (how romantic!) and her parents are from Equatorial Guinea, the only African country where Spanish is spoken.

With the release of her album “Mi nina Lola” came well deserved acclaim. This album is full of beautifully written songs.  How I wish you could all speak Spanish so you too could experiene each song to the fullest.  I assure you that even if you don’t understand the lyrics the sentiment they convey will not be lost.  Music after all is a powerful force.

Some in her native Spain have called Concha Buika the greatest Flamenco singer to come along this century. That’s a powerful statement and one that makes me smile with pride. I know that her deep chocolate skin and thick mane must have surprised and disarmed many.

Check out a video of “Mi nina Lola” here.
