Obama on a Friday Evening in Philadelphia
It was a perfect evening in Philly. There was a cool and comfortable breeze calming the excitement of what was about to take place; a historic moment. Every now and then I would look behind me to check the time on the clock of Independence Hall. In a matter of minutes the lawn of the Independence National Historical Park began to swell and looked like a patchwork quilt of many colors. I saw young and old, Blacks, Whites, Latinos, and Asians all united in one purpose…their support for the senator from Illinois, Barack Obama. There was the Australian immigrant who drove down from Florida to be there. “I would not have missed this for the world” she said. My husband saw a friend he had not seen in 15 years. I saw entire families sitting on blankets talking about hope. I saw strangers greeting each other in a manner of solidarity.
Oh my feet and legs were about to give and my bladder wasn’t too far behind. But I can tell you that when Obama was finally introduced all that went away. We erupted in a deafening cheer. OBAMA! OBAMA! we cried out. Some held their cell phones up to share the moment with those who could not attend. “Can you hear him mom?” someone said. Obama’s voice was like thunder. It was strong and honest. He challenged all of us to declare our independence from a system that has blocked so much progress in recent years.
After all was said and done, the crowd was estimated at 39,000 last Friday evening; the largest crowd in the campaign’s history. People left inspired, fired up and ready to vote on Tuesday. I’ll be up early tomorrow to cast my vote.
If you were at the rally last Friday, I would love to hear what you came away with.
PHILADELPHIA…IT IS YOUR TIME TO DECLARE YOUR INDEPENDENCE!
